Today students from seven U.S. universities visited Pueblo Viejo in the Dominican Republic to investigate reported worker rights abuses by Sodexo at a gold mine co-owned by Barrick Gold Corporation and GoldCorp. Students delivered a letter (original in Spanish | English translation) to Barrick and GoldCorp urging the companies to terminate their contract with Sodexo for catering and facilities management mine. Sodexo workers at the gold mine, expected to rake in revenues over $30 billion for the owners, report struggling with severe poverty wages.
The students’ investigation was part of a week-long trip organized by United Students Against Sweatshops to build relationships with workers sewing college apparel at the Alta Gracia factory and other Dominican workers.
Stay tuned for a report directly from the students who met with Barrick management and Sodexo management at the mine!
